Jakarta - Many people only know about steam power plants (PLTU) through the environmental issues that often surround them. But what if a steam power plant actually provided a beautiful park-like atmosphere, complete with a habitat where animals could live comfortably?
It was this curiosity that led the Jelajah Energi team from Listrik Indonesia Media to travel to Cilacap, Central Java. That evening, Monday (September 29), the journey began. Our goal: to uncover the story behind the Cilacap PLTU managed by PT Sumber Segara Primadaya (S2P).
The next day, we were warmly welcomed by S2P's Technical and Operations Director, Irvan Rahmat, and his team. Coinciding with the celebration of Maulid Nabi, the atmosphere of togetherness was palpable. However, before the event began, Mr. Irvan invited us to stop by a special corner of the power plant.
Before us lay a green garden with rows of coconut trees and animals running freely. “If the animals are comfortable, it means the environment is comfortable,” said Mr. Irvan. At first glance, it was hard to believe that we were at a power plant. It felt more like we were vacationing on a tropical island.
We spent two full days in Cilacap. Together with Mas Joko, one of S2P's staff members, we explored various social and economic development programs initiated by the company. These ranged from support for renewable energy and the use of environmentally friendly vehicles to community empowerment programs. All of this shows that the existence of coal-fired power plants can have a much broader meaning than simply being a provider of electricity.
Not only that, S2P's work is in line with President Prabowo's Asta Cita to strengthen national energy security, create quality jobs, and encourage the emergence of a green and blue economy (environmental and community conservation). The Cilacap PLTU is not just about electricity that lights homes and industries, but also about how fossil fuels can be managed cleanly, efficiently, and in harmony with the environment.
Through its core values of “BERKAH” (Happy, Efficient, Reliable, Competent, Adaptive, Harmonious), S2P aims to prove that a power plant can simultaneously serve as a driver of regional growth, an environmental guardian, and a community partner.
This story is just the beginning of our journey in unveiling Indonesia's energy landscape. There are many more fascinating stories ready to be shared with the public.
